In 1988, Martin Margiela propelled himself to the forefront of Belgian fashion by founding his namesake haute couture house, whose avant-garde, deconstructivist approach would revolutionize contemporary fashion. The designer refused to give interviews or appear in public, remaining anonymous. Following Margiela's departure in 2009, the Paris-based creative team took over until 2014, when John Galliano was appointed Artistic Director. Recycled materials, aged effects, draping, asymmetrical cuts and trompe-l'œil punctuate leather bags, minimalist jewelry and variations on the iconic Replica sneakers.
